Senate Majority Leader Statement on Senate Budget Repair Action

Madison, WI This afternoon, the Senate once again attempted to pass Gov. Walker’s budget repair bill.  Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald (R-Juneau) released the following statement in response:

“Once again, the eyes of the state, the country and every one of their constituents are now squarely on 14 empty seats, and it is an absolute embarrassment.

“I’m proud of my Republican colleagues in the state Assembly for their dedication and courage, through the longest debate in the history of that body.  It is a real shame that the Democrats chose to forfeit their right to amend the bill in the Senate.

“Wisconsin deserves better.  We are facing a significant budget shortfall both this year and on day one of the next budget, and the 14 Democrat senators should be ashamed of themselves for how hard they’re fighting to protect this broken status quo.  There are some very real consequences, and as many as 1,500 to 5,000 real jobs are hanging in the balance because of the Democrats’ stunt.

“It is long past time for the Senate Democrats to come back to the Capitol and do their job.”
